Quote of the Week

When we were in Denver we passed a sign by some horse stables that said "Horse Boarding."  I read it out loud and Bella said:

"Horse boarding?  Like snow boarding on a horse?  So you put sleds on the horse's feet and slide down the mountain!"

It's quite a funny thing to picture, until you think about the poor horse.

Vacation

John and Bella went off to Missouri to spend a few weeks with my dad.  So last weekend we drove out to Denver and my dad met us there to pick them up and we made a little vacation out of it.  It was really fun, we drove out to Rock Springs first and stayed the night there.  On the way we stopped at Fort Bridger and learned a little history, it was neat to learn some Utah history from the other side.  Then the next day we headed to Denver stopping at the Wyoming Territorial Prison.  Really neat and the kids loved it, especially John.  What little boy wouldn't love an old jail right?

Then after John and Bella left we took the younger two and went to Elitch Garden, the theme park in Denver.  Phoebe had lots of fun riding all the different rides.

Well first she didn't like the plane ride and we couldn't figure out why

As soon as the ride ended she got off and said she wanted to go again which surprised me since she didn't seem to like it. Turns out she just wanted to ride in a blue plane, then all was good.

And we got a caricature done of Phoebe.

And on the way back home we stopped at a park that had really cool rocks and walked the trail a bit. It was beautiful.

And now we're enjoying a nice quiet house without the older two.  Phoebe is a much different person without John and Bella around and I'm loving spending time with her.  Though she seems to miss them, they always kept her entertained.

She's 3

I've been way behind on posting lately.  But finally I'm trying to get caught up.  Phoebe turned three last Friday (the 22nd.)  She has really grown so much these past few months.  She's talking great now, complete conversations (and she's says the funniest things.)  This is my absolute favorite age, everything is still so new and exciting but she's really her own individual person already and even her tantrums are still cute.  It'll pass so quickly but if I could keep her any age forever it'd be this one.  I've got to try and get some new good pictures taken of her.

At her birthday dinner, she picked The Olive Garden

She did this the other day in the car, when I went to unstrap her she said "I made my hair all pretty."

And still happily rear facing at age three

Butterflies

Our last butterfly emerged yesterday and this time we finally managed to catch it in the act and watch it come out.  It was really neat.  Today we let them all go and Bella got to hold one.  It stayed on her finger for quite awhile before flying away and I got some pictures.  The others all flew away quickly.  It's been so much fun to watch them grow and change and I can't wait to do it again.

School

An all around update on school stuff.

Our caterpillars:
They went into their chrysalides last Sunday and stay in those for about 7-10 days.  So I told the kids on Monday to keep an eye on them.  I also read that the chrysalis gets really dark before they come out and yesterday morning I noticed that two were really dark so I said something to John and Bella and we sat at the table and did some work and then I went to remind them and noticed a butterfly had come out while we were sitting there.  So we watched it for a long time and Bella drew pictures of it.  Yesterday afternoon the second one came out.  Today I noticed the third had emerged right as we were heading outside to start school and when I ran back inside to grab something a few minutes later the 4th was out too.  So we now have 4 great looking butterflies.  The fifth took a day or so longer to form his chrysalis so I'm guessing it will be another day before he comes out (maybe tomorrow.)

It's nearly impossible to get pictures of them through the screen on their cage but I tried

Preschool:
A couple months ago Phoebe started preschool.  Her neighbor friend is just a couple months older than her so they've been doing school together.  She goes over to his house for an hour on Mondays and he comes over to our house for an hour on Wednesdays.  It's been going great, she loves it and is always asking to do school.  In the last few months since we began she's learned her colors, can count to 20, sings the alphabet, holds a crayon/pencil correctly and can draw faces.

Today we excavated toys (little dinosaurs and toy cars) from a big block of ice using warm water, cold water, salt and forks.  It was a big hit and kept all four kids happily entertained for an hour.  They saw how warm water melts the ice faster than cold and how if you pour the water slowly it melts a lot faster than if you just dump it all at once.

We're taking the whole week off from our regular 1st grade curriculum since Monday was a holiday.  We're just learning through play this week and enjoying the butterflies.

Oh and just for fun, the duck that hangs out in our yard had babies.  Saturday the kids discovered her with 8 little baby ducks.

Sky Coaster

Bella and Corey rode the Sky Coaster today at Lagoon.  I tell you when it comes to amusement park rides this girl isn't afraid of anything.  Anything she's tall enough for she rides.  I didn't think she'd be tall enough and Corey was going to go alone but when I double checked as we got there I found out she is tall enough.  She of course jumped at the chance to go (and John again cried about not being tall enough.)

She wants to go back again but since it costs $15 a person that won't be happening again anytime too soon.  And later Corey took John on the go-carts (which also costs) to even out the score between them a little.  He LOVED it.
